The Future?

Postby DaveMk1 » Wed Dec 10, 2008 6:52 am

I can see myself going this way at some point. With the light batteries it will even go around corners.

I would think a proper electric car would be great for Solo, having basically all your torque from a standstill would be sweet.
Something like this perhaps? :)

With the light batteries

Isn't that a paradox? ;)

I watched that video a few days ago actually. If I remember right he went from 700lbs of Lead Acid batteries to 150lbs of lithium batteries. old batteries would do 1 run and be dead, the lithium ones could do a few runs.

I told some coworkers about this car and they just laughed at me... electric with the right batteries will beat gas or diesel any day, problem is the batteries...

When I went to the National SCCA convention years ago there was someone trying really hard to get electric racing/solo going. The problem they had was with battery leakage. I hope battery technology has increased since then. I think a electric car would be awesome for solo - just have to make sure you got enough juice left to get you home!

the tech is there, the prices are not.

For solo racing you basically need the LiFePo4 batteries (lithium iron phosphate). They can dump the current you need and are supposed to be environmentally friendly. From what I see in a quick search 55Ah 144volt pack would cost about $12k. For AutoX that pack is probably a bit large but if you want to drive to the event... a 10ah pack with 288 volts would be better on the track.

I am considering trying to find a 90-91 miata to convert to electric. Not a lithium pack of course... So If any one knows of a dead one let me know. ;) 90-91 because they are the lightest years.

:D Hi everyone. I can't remember the name of the show but a few weeks ago, on History channel, they had show about Chryslers up and coming Electric car. The batteries for it was ONE big Lit Ion battery, not a multitude of small ones. If I remember correctly the battery weighed about 600lbs.
As for building a Solo car I wonder how a Tans Am type of car would work? What we talking about here is riding a full sized " Slot Car". I wonder how many people even remember or know what a slot car is? :? :?
I also wonder what type of motor was used in that drag car? What I mean is was it brushed or brushless? I fly RC airplanes. I have only one glow engine and many Electric planes. The speed controler for my electric planes takes DC voltage and converts it to 3 Phase and then the motors are brushless. Much more power and no brushs to worry about. They also have all the RC cars and buggys that run on batteries on brushless sets up too.
The one thing about Lit Ion batteries is they are a lot more dangerous that Nicad or Nickle metals. They take a special charger to charge them. When a Lit Ion or Lit Poly battery that is damaged or gone bad is charged it can burst into flames. The fire is like a Phosphorous fire, very hot and very had to put out.

Well, I personally can't wait for it. A whole new can of worms to mod and tweak. The Tesla battery pack is pretty sweet and they are making good progress in terms of fire prevention, but the biggest hurdle right now is the cost.

Russ will still beat me whether it is the Elise or the Tesla, but I will have fun trying to catch him.

the Drag car has a custom modified motor, its 2 series wound motors combined into one. the first for off the line power and the second takes over for the top end stuff.

Since the forum seems to be working again, here is what I meant to post a few weeks ago about the car.

lists most of the specs and what not on the car.
