Helena 5/1 Post-Race

Postby Jmudge » Sun May 01, 2016 6:49 pm

Thanks everybody for a great first event of 2016! Everything seemed to run pretty smoothly with the exception of figuring out a few kinks in the new timing system. Great driving by everyone! See you guys in a few weeks.

I had a wonderful time--both Evo and todays event...driving home I marinated that I had just spent an exciting weekend doing what I love with the people I love...what joy...made last winter seem even longer....but it is nice to be backing sharing this with all of you...thanks for all the helping out---our members are great at spotting slack and picking it up....and the new timing system was wonderful---got times in the computer, even when the display was off...nice back door efficiency in the system...and I must point out that after I was home and had time to peruse the PAX sheet, I am struck that Rose was top after the two national guys...I guess he really is Mister National...don't worry, he is too unassuming to let it got to his head---so I will assume for him....and the rest of the field---wow....around me was 9 drivers within .75 seconds of Pax...the race is truly on for the season...tonite, I think I will dream about the rest of the season since it is never too early to start looking ahead (see, I did listen during the Evo II school--lol)

I have to admit I got spanked by Mr. Rose today. Fantastic driving! I forgot to mention that I saw Mel hit 4 cones in the Chicago box, but they all stood upright inside the box. Not sure if I've ever seen that before!

Mudge...thanks for that story---no one else told me they were standing....it is true when I aimed for them I was only trying to encourage them to move...lol...and I thought I took your record for the most cones slaughtered in one run....

What a fun day.

Thanks to Mel for being the EC, Alex for getting our new timing system up and running, Mr. Mudge for setting a fun course, the two Toms for sticking around and running with us after teaching the EVO school and to everyone else for being cool and driving hard.

What a great day to start the season.

Thank you Mel and James for the help setting the course! As it turns out, I think I enjoy that task quite a bit, and would like to do more in the future. Once again, thanks for the great weekend guys!

A great event to start the year, It is fun to be out there again. As far as my times went, I felt really good out there, and tire, tires, tires! Tom S also drove my car and had great tips for small time saving improvements, and I was actually able to apply them. My best run had a great feel to it. As Ice Cube says: "I got to say it was good day".

Hopefully I can repeat when Mudge is on fresh tires. But I dont mind crushing the opposition when I can!

Everyone is off to fast start and got faster through the day. Now that the cobwebs are out it will start getting serious again. I was impressed by the new timing lights, if some people wouldnt walk through the beam things would have gone better  .

Great work and a great event everyone. see you all in two weeks.

Just wanted to thank everyone for a great weekend. The hospitality shown to us when we come to town is always overwhelming. I believe this is the fourth or fifth year in a row that I've been fortunate enough to instruct in Helena at the Evo school and it's always a pleasure to come there. You have a great bunch of people and some very good drivers. Your region feels like my second home :)

This has been the first year I've been able to stay for the event the next day, and I'm glad I did. The course was a lot of fun, and it was challenging to drive. You're very lucky to have such a good site. The "road course" is a nice addition to the usual autocross format.

Thanks to everyone for making the school run so smoothly, and a special thanks to James for letting me drive his car the next day. The car feels great, and James, you drove great. It was nice to see how much you improved through the day. I'm sure you and Mudge will have some good battles this year.

Again, thanks to all of you for making us feel so welcome. We'll be back anytime you want us.

Thanks again for coming out and instructing Tom! It is always a pleasure having you guys in Helena. It was very nice that you were able to stay around and help out and race with us on Sunday. Everyone seemed to really enjoy having you there.

It was great having you join us Tom. I hope maybe next year we can get and EVO 3 school so that all of us who've taken 1 and 2 can turn it up a notch.

I hope you have a good season and I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us - it means a lot.

Come on back any time you like - we'll leave the light on for ya.

Phase 3 would be awesome.

Some thoughts from Sunday:

One: Damn that cone on my second to last run! I could have really used that 62.6xx
Two: After looking at my data logs, I need to step it up a bit on my braking! Over and over I see a pathetic .8-.85g brake, followed by a 1.2+g corner. Need to brake later, and harder, and carry that speed further! Other room for improvement for sure, but that is the one that really jumped out at me.

Thanks everybody for a fun event. I really enjoyed the course even though I gave Mudge shit about it.

The new timing system did have some kinks and they got ironed out throughout the day to work flawlessly on the last set of runs. I really appreciate Alex taking the time help me learn the new setup. Short answer on the timing, a redundant system can be a pain but if used properly will work better than a system with a single point of failure.

That's a tricky one to get.
