Lost a member....

Postby rkaiser » Wed Aug 14, 2013 11:50 am

I received this from Will Payne about his father:

I am very sad to let you know we lost my Dad. He was diagnosed with liver cancer on Monday and he died Friday afternoon at his home in McCall. Can you do me a favor? Please write a small post on our forums, I believe he was still a member of our club and knew many. He raced from the mid fifties to mid sixties with a variety cars, including TR-3's and 4's, several 1st and 2nd generation Corvettes, and two specials he and and a couple of friends built. A Kellison bodied TR-3 running a fuel injected small block Chevy, and a Cooper Monaco also with a F.I. small block. Both of which are campaigned today as Grizzly Torque Specials, named after their team. These and some of his Corvettes have run Laguna both in the day and Historics. He was team principle of Payne Motorsports which due to his support allowed Robert and I to enjoy many days of racing with him and the rest of our motorsports family. He will be forever missed.

William Payne was the reason I got a STI way back in 2004. Seeing his silver STI sitting in the dealer made me order mine. I don't think he was at the auto crosses much but was up at Lewistown. I remember arguing with him on how the STI boost controller worked :) He definitely inspired me by coming up to Lewistown and showing me you can enjoy driving fast for a long time.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. He certainly will be missed by many.

I always enjoyed talking with him - such a depth of knowledge and a kind and gentle way of sharing it. A rare combo for sure.

All my best to the Payne family.

Wow, just yesterday I saw his STi on the trailer going through Bozeman, which made me think I hadn't seen him in a while and hoped to see him soon.

Very sad, so sudden.

Sorry for your loss.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear this. I was fortunate enough to drive with William up at Lewistown and he was a great guy and instructor. I remember how fun it was when both him and his son autocrossed with us at the MSU lot a few years back.

So sorry Will. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I remember watching you Dad at Lewistown, he really knew how to drive. He always struck me as a real veteran racer. And he so fun to visit with between runs.

It as always sad to lose a fellow gear head. I never had the fortune of meeting him, but my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

Will, Robert and Joy...am very sorry for your loss...I didn't know your dad, but he sounds like a great guy who touched the lives of many...having lost my parents, I know the void you must feel...it did help me to cherish all the memories...be well
