A good start to 2014.

Postby DaveMk1 » Thu Jan 02, 2014 1:37 pm

I filled out all the forms and sent a deposit today for my new car..........pretty darn excited and a good way to start the new year.

This is the car I'm getting aside from the rear end bodywork which will be more traditional 'Seven' looking. And of course it will be bright orange!

Happy New Year!

Do you still have your old tire rack from the Birkin? If so, will it work with the new car or you just going to use the trailer?

Hey - The tire rack I made for the Birkin went with the car and just as well as it was made to fit that exact car and I doubt it would even fit a different Birkin let alone a Westfield.

The plan seems to be that for local events I will either run a DOT tire and drive to events or that I will tow my lil' tire trailer behind the Westfield. One of the reasons I chose the Westfield over another brand is that it looks easier to set it up to tow a trailer.

For Helena events the Lovely Karin would like me to tow the Westfield behind the TDi for safety sake so I will be getting a lightweight aluminum motorcycle trailer to put the car on. I need to find the right one but it looks doable.

Plenty to do that's for sure.

I hope it isn't made out of those little steel strips and held together with those little bolts and square nuts. Those of you that aren't of a 'certain age' will wonder WTF I'm talking about but those in the know will remember those little square nuts being lost under your bed to never be found again.

This should be an interesting ride if nothing else!

Yo Big Mel -

My car will be left hand drive (they offer both right and left) and I'll be building it here in the garage. I might have to store stuff not yet bolted to the car in the basement to have there be working room but it should work out OK.

You will of course be welcome to visit and check out the process. I'm sure it will be involved and take more time that expected but with any luck I won't miss many/any of our events.

Now I need to do some serious Honda S2000 engine shopping.............

Brad K. and Phil S. better be suspicious if Dave suddenly wants to come and visit you! He might just want that S2000 running gear. Looks like a fun project, I hope you don't end up with a handful of leftover fasteners. You say a couple of months to arrival, will there be time to run in early season events?

It's all hard to tell how long things will take..........how long will it take to get here? I'm not sure. I'm supposed to get a schedule soon. They tell me usually about 12 weeks from order to delivery.

How long will it take to build? I've heard estimates of 100-150 hours.........so it's certainly not a weekend project. Combine the shipping time and the build time and it becomes iffy for the first event or two. If it's not ready I might run the Mini for the fun of it........we'll see.

It will take a long time and be a lot of work anyway you slice it but I like work..........I just don't like waiting :)

none of my usual sarcasm = I would love to be labor as you proceed....I will not get in the way, and my back never hurts nearly as much as my comments related to cones would suggest...you will be subjected to many questions...if you are good with that, let me know when you are building and even need labor (such as helping carry pieces up from the basement).....this looks to be the best fun possible (short of building my own, and in fact if might be more fun than building my own, given certain mental and mechanical advantages you have)

The truck came to pick up the Elise today and I'd be a liar if I didn't tell you I had second thoughts about it going away. It made me really sad to see it go around the corner knowing I'd never see it again.

It showed me some good times. I hold my glass high and thank Lotus and my Elise for some wonderful memories.

dave

P.S. - yes it was a bitch and not a little bit scary trying to get that thing up onto the truck off the sheet of ice road in front of my house. As I got nervous I thought to myself - 'good thing it's not my car!'

Well, the holidays are over, the weather is warming up, by Montana standards anyway. It must be about time go racing again isn't it? If so Dave may have to get a rental car. Be careful using the Mini, if you damage it you are in deep doo-doo at home.

Naw - the Mini will be fine. And I have a set of used R888's that will fit it and I'll be racing for the first time ever is 'stock'...........at least if I can't get the Westfield done in time.

Well I'm pleased to say that I found and purchased an engine and transmission for the Westfield. It was a fresh crash victim that was it on the passenger side and totaled. The engine has 77,000 miles and running as it should and will go onto a truck on Monday.

My kit is scheduled to ship in about 3-4 weeks but it goes by boat so will take some time. I'll run through the engine and replace some seals and belts when it gets here and it should be ready to drop into the chassis long before the chassis is ready.

Feels good to be moving forward a bit.

Nice! And such Low mileage. Do you use all of the other S2000 parts too, like master cylinder, pedals, (wiring harness I am sure)? If you are lucky you won't have to even change the oil on the new engine, that will save some time. Lots of fun to look forward too, in the mean time, skiing.

Nope - the car uses the engine, trans, engine wiring harness, and motor mounts from the S2000 and everything else is made for the car by Westfield.

Westfield does make a SDV (single donor vehicle) that uses the Miata as it's donor car and I was tempted by that. One can pick up a used Miata fairly cheaply and then pull everything off it (they use it all - even gauges and stuff like that) and it looks like a very straight forward way to get into a Westfield. But I really wanted that S2000 engine so I'm in a different car.

Wish me luck!

It's still too many weeks before the crate arrives but I did get a lump today.

Now to figure out what all the hoses and wires hook to!
