Yuletide Carjacking

Postby T WRX » Mon Dec 10, 2012 3:10 pm

Hello all -

Since I've been extra good this year, I'm hoping that Santa might stuff a racing jack into my stocking. I've borrowed a few from some folks during events, but I'm not sure which brands they were.

I'm wondering if anyone has one that either:

A. They really like and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and would gladly recommend

or

B. They hate with an undying passion due to poor quality, safety or other undesirable qualities

I've seen several choices on ye olde interwebs, and prices vary considerably. Some of them seem exorbitant, and others seem too cheap to believe. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Well - let me tell you what I have and how I ended up with it.

I have had two aluminum race jacks over the years. Both are/were the 'Torin Big Red 1 1/2 ton" race jack. I got the first one a long time ago and it leaked just a bit right out of the box and brand new. I complained to the company and they sent me a rebuild kit. Gee.......thanks for that. I didn't feel I should have to rebuild the thing on my time but it was their policy.

I did rebuild it but it was never quite right and always weeped a bit of fluid. It worked perfectly aside from that and it was light and small so it fit in the Birkin. But (you knew there was a 'but' coming) one day at an event in Helena it puked out a bunch of fluid. Good fun. It was a good time to test my theory that gatorade will not compress. It turns out gatorade makes a fine hydro fluid! It worked to get me home but when I got home I ordered a new one.

I can't recall where I found it but it was one that looked a lot like the Torin brand I bought the first time but it had a different name. I ordered it and when it arrived it was the same exact thing I had before. I've had this second one now for a good 4-5 years at least and it works perfectly.

So - hows that for a bunch of useless info?

Well, at least I learned something new about Gatorade. ;)

Thanks for your thoughts, Dave.

Now that I'm out of town, I might not be much help, but the jack I have has been wonderful. It's extremely low profile and has a very long reach. Only downside is that it's steel so it's heavy, but I've used it repeatedly for events without issue. Feel free to check it out when you pick up the STi!

James, this is the Jack that I have (think Dave has the same one). http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200313500_200313500 I have only used it on the Lotus so far but it is nice and light. I've had no problems with it.

That's the same one I have - seems to be good and have had no issues with the second one. Damning with faint praise? Maybe.

I'd buy it again FWIW.
