1976 BMW 2002

Postby RayAR » Tue Nov 15, 2011 11:55 am

The first ride I had at in autocross was in Tim Fountaines 2002 and I have allways really like Dave V's racecar. I found this one locally and think it is a pretty good price http://honolulu.craigslist.org/big/cto/2703030934.html I haven't had a chance to take a look at it but the description sounds decent.

Does anyone know the problem points on these cars, the only thing I have really found is the rear hub is not very strong and can break under hard cornering usually flipping the car in the process. anything else to look at? Maybe I should give Tim a call.

I asked our resident 2002 expert Mr. Venema to chime in and he tried but for some reason the forum won't let him post............

Too bad - I'll bet he has some sage words.

The owner decided to keep it. Probably a good thing because right now we are broke, broke, broke!!!!!!

The more I researched it the more it looks like this car was an absoulute steal and I think the owner figured that out.

I know the 2002 is still for sale and still tempting but I have found a few other cars that I would like to have. A 74 240Z with a little rust for $1500. A 75 280Z for $1500, Haven't really checked into it, And a 1990 Miata that needs tranny work for $1000, Also found a tranny for it for $300. Now I just need some $. Anyone want to give me a short term loan for $1500.

If you want to stick a V8 in it (and I know you do) your better off with the 280Z than the 240Z as long as the condition is comparable. The 280Z has a stronger stiffer body and can handle the extra power better.
'72 Datsun 240Z - With full interior.

LOL, you know I do but right now money is tight plus power is overated for autocross unless you can plant that power, it sure makes it fun though. It is also going to be my daily driver so the farthest it will ever go would be SP or one of the ST classes. The Miata sounds the most appealing considering all that but I do love those old Z cars. Another car that seem plentiful are the 240sx but usually over priced.

If I were in your shoes I'd be looking hard at a first gen Miata - light, wonderful handling and a large number of cars to choose from. I read recently that the Miata is the best selling sports car of all time so there are a few out there.

How's the weather there - miss the cold yet :(

I agree Dave. Time to try my hand with a small, good handleing, underpowered car instead of a high powered overweight pig of a car I am used to driving.

The weather is great but because of the big mountains on this island it is usually overcast I am sure the VOG dosen't help with keeping it looking overcast, The weather can be best described as eternal Spring, love it. Getting acclimated, High 60's and even low 70's are starting to feel a bit chilly to me. Not missing the snow and cold at all and if I ever do it is just a short drive up to 14,000 ft Mauna Kea where it barely gets above freezing during the winter months, even some occasional snow. So much variety on this island, From the lush tropical rain forests on the Hilo Side(East) To large Lava deserts and awsome beaches over here on the Kona Side and very Montana like up in Cattle country, Waimea, even a weekly rodeo if you like that. I can't imagine ever leaving this place.

Very good - I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying it and settling in. How does your adorable daughter like it?

Miata - I think 'momentum' cars are very good at teaching us to really drive and carry speed. There is no power to rely on and you just need to flow..........and then when you put that technique to use with a high powered car you are silly fast.

Have fun and Happy Holidays to you.
