Commons Sept. 10th.

Postby DaveMk1 » Sun Sep 04, 2011 2:45 pm

So we have an event coming up next Saturday at the Commons and I'm wondering if we have an EC and if that EC has picked a course designer or course.

In the past I've done the course designs for this lot and while I'm fine doing it again if the EC would like me to I wanted to make sure the EC (whomever that may be) knew that they can do it themselves if they'd like of have someone else do it. I'd be happy to send the old course designs and blank maps of the lot to whomever is doing the course.

IMO this is a tricky lot on which to design a course and it should not be left to the last minute if one wants to get a good result. So if I should send old courses/maps to someone please let me know or if the EC wants me to do it again and I can do that too. I ask now because it takes me a few days of stewing on it to come up with something I like.

What say you EC?

I'm excited to run again and look forward to next Saturday.

Put me down for C.O.Workers. I can do timing as well, so sign me up for that too. That is unless BMWNick shows up then he might want to time.

Here is the course we intend to run this Saturday at the Commons. It's similar in concept to the last time we ran there but with a few different features. It of course could change a bit when the cones get set but this should be pretty close.

We will drag a chalk line to make things as clear as they can be to keep things as simple as possible. Simple = goodness.

Hi Everyone,

I am new here and met a few of you at the last AutoX at the Commons.

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this question, but I intend to attend the event this Saturday. The tech/safety checklist mentions that the battery must be secured. My battery is in the trunk and is such that I cannot secure it without the risk of shorting the terminals (E36 BMW with Optima battery). Is this strictly enforced for AutoX?

Thanks,

Eggplant

Hi, welcome to the forums. Glad to hear that you will be making it out this weekend!

So is your battery just loosey goosey flopping around the back then? lol. I don't think that would work. Maybe some of the other guys will chime in.

Hey Mr. Egg,

The battery needs to be securely stuck in place no matter what. It is of course for safety reasons just in case something bad were to happen that last thing we need is a shorted battery throwing sparks and arcing all over the place.

So yes it needs to be securing tied down. It needs to be held rigidly - no duct tape or bungie cords. It would be surprising if there wasn't a way to do it that wouldn't interfere with the terminals......not to mention that it's unsafe even to use on the street unsecured. All hell breaks loose if that thing shorts out. Even a minor fender bender can quickly become a car totaling fire if that thing shorts out.

If you can't figure something out you might make a call to Autoworks. They know BMW's inside and out and i'll bet they could help you out. Tell them you want to autocross with the club and I'll bet they can fix you up. Their number is 586 3709.

Please let us know if you have any questions or need any help. We'd be happy to help and look forward to seeing your Beemer run.

Thanks for the replies. The battery sits width-wise in the battery well and doesn't slide around due to its weight and the terminal clamps. The well is just wide enough to accommodate the battery and is longer (stock E36 batteries were not very tall but quite long). I have a "J" style clamp set (two vertical posts) that I have on either side of the battery but the only way to have any sort of clamp is to use just a small piece on either end (nothing spanning the whole length of the battery).

I can mickey mouse something but I'm not sure it will meet spec. I'll try Tim but he is so busy I'm not sure I'll get a hold of him in time.

Thanks

Cool - it needs to secure enough that if the car were to roll over that it would stay in place.

See you soon.

Is it possible that the J-clamps hook to a bracket that mounts along one long edge of the battery between the clamps? It looks like an piece of angle steel. That is how my bracket works and is very secure, but of course I am not driving a Bavarian product, but a Tokyo brand.

I do have those small brackets that I will try. Unfortunately the natural mounting point (post vertical and perpendicular (if you will) to the battery) is awfully near the terminals. I've left a message with Tim at Autoworks to see if he has a suggestion.

Eggplant-

Welcome!

We've had the previous generation (e-30) BMWs for many years. I'm not sure if the battery mounting system is the same in e-36 models, but on e-30s there is a metal hold-down plate that fits over the plastic lip on the bottom of the battery. This plate is held down by a long bolt. Unfortunately, when it's time for a replacement battery, almost nobody has the odd-sized one that BMW prefers, and the hold-down plate doesn't fit with most batteries. To get a battery of the correct dimensions is often nearly twice the cost of a "conventional" battery. Unfortunately, some people opt for a cheaper battery and end up losing or throwing away the plate and bolt, leaving the problem for the next owner of the car. (Grrrrrr.....) I once dealt with this problem by building a hold-down plate with some scrap steel, a MIG welder and a bench grinder. This let me get away with using a much cheaper battery but I could still mount it securely. I'm guessing that something like this is what Andy has in mind. Give him a call. Hope to see you Saturday!

I just got back from Andy's shop and he squared me away with a battery tray fastened to the trunk floor, etc. I should be good to go! Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and getting some driving in. :D

Hey,

Just a quick thanks to you all for a really fun day. A special thanks to James and Joe for making it happen and a H U G E thanks to Joe for driving the LoveShack back and forth from Autoworks. Three on the Tree! Good fun. If "three on the tree' means nothing to you then you are too young!

I hope everyone liked the course today - I think it worked pretty well and was about as quick as I dare go on that size lot. Speaking of that - you may have noticed that the Commons is increasing the size of their lot and they are adding another lot on the east side of the building. I have no idea at this point if we will be able to tie the two lots in together for long long course. We'll have to see how it looks once they get the tarmac put down. But anyway you cut it the main lot will be a bit bigger next year.

Thanks again - see you in a few weeks.

Oh....... while I'm thinking of it - I just want to say this aloud if you will. A few folks have been working very hard to make the events happen this year and we've not had too many different Event Chairs. I think we are at risk of burning those few folks out and if no one takes the EC job for an event there is no event. Russ needs to submit the paperwork to the SCCA two weeks (I think this is right) before the event and there needs to be an EC listed on the form. If that date is passed then no event.

So ......... please.......... do folks like Joe and Russ and James a favor and take some of the load. You will need help your first time and you'll get so much help it will be easy as pie. So please step up. Everyone will appreciate it. I know I will.

Thanks so much,

dave
