Top Gun 2011.

Postby DaveMk1 » Tue Aug 09, 2011 10:01 pm

So.........who's headed north for Top Gun? I know I will be but haven't mad up my mind yet if I'll do both days or not. I asked Blue on their forum what days count for what (since Top Gun counts for both the MT challenge and Top Gun itself) but it seems he hasn't looked at their forum in a few days as I haven't gotten an answer. I assume that the MTC counts only Sunday but that Top Gun counts both days. We'll have to wait to find out.

I hope many from our region will head up. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of course Jeff comes up with.

So who's going?

I will be coming up for sunday I think. I wont make both days, just too much time away from my family. I am looking forward to another shot at the big track.

As far as I know the rules are that Sunday is the only day that counts for the Mt Challenge. But I don't know the specific Top Gun rules.

Its not looking good for me going. Wish I could make more events this year, but have too much going on. Helena is a great place to autocross, and if you are on the fence about it I'd encourage you to go. Our region needs drivers to go win that Top Gun trophy!

I will be there camping out for both days. I have to keep those pesky Miatas at bay. Hopefully our club will be well represented, it looks like it so far. And remember, don't fear the sweeper, use it to your advantage.

I just got an answer from Blue on how things will work for Top Gun. Here is what he said -

Yes to competing only on Sat or Sun.
Sun results count towards the MT Chal
Drivers must compete both days to gain points for their region and the Top Gun trophy.
Drivers can win an award if they only compete one day however if another driver competes both days in the same class they will receive a higher placing in the finial standings.

At this point I plan on being there both days and look forward to racing again.

See you all this weekend.

Your website says:

But, now you say by Monday at 11:59pm, which is the 15th.

So...which day is the real deadline??

So I think I will make it to the race though I am going to try and run my Honda Insight as the Miata has some issues I cannot fix at this time...

The Car starts in HS but I plan to use the tires for the Miata on the Honda (same bolt pattern and way more sticky) I believe this will put the Honda in the STS class just like the Miata. The tires are the only change from stock that will be different.

165/65R14 to 195/50R15

I believe the offsets are pretty close too but I will have to measure first.

How might all this affect my points for the MT challenge? Am I correct in classing at STS with just the tire change?

I have no idea how it will affect points for the series but I think it will kick ass to see the Insight go. I heart that car.

See you soon.

Unless there is a mistake you weren't listed as an entrant in the July 31st Round 2 event. Therefore you cannot be eligible for placement in the Mt Challenge. If you had been at round 2 and you could find another STS car to drive then you would still be eligible, but you have to participate in all 3 events. Sorry, rules are rules.
mtgeekman wrote:Am I correct in classing at STS with just the tire change?

The Insight is not eligible for any Street Touring class. The only class it's specifically allowed in is HS, but all the Street Touring classes specifically say "No Electric or Hybrid-Electric vehicles".

I don't want to dissuade you from bringing your Insight and driving at the event. I think it would be fun to see it out there. I just wouldn't know what class to put you in.

Are the wheels the same width and diameter? I think for stock, if they are the same width and diameter, the offset can vary by 1/4" or so.

I think you should run it either way!

The wheels aren't the same diameter. You can't put a 14" tire on a 15" wheel or vice-versa.

The Milwaukee Region car classing list is a bit dated, 2007, but it looks like the list they are still using in 2010. The rules have probably changed based on what Kent noted, but as of this listing it show the Insight in HS or FSP, but may also be eligible at that time for STS, STX, STU,ST2, SM, SM2. If ST is out you could still run FSP if there is a problem getting in to HS. You won't have R-compound tires, but you will have that great acceleration and torque.

I assume it's still bad north or 3 forks but can't say for sure. They had A LOT of road torn up last time I went that way and i heard they ripped up more since then. I like the drive through Boulder better anyway. It took about 5 minutes longer last time but was an easier and prettier drive.

that's odd that their doc says that it was eligible for STS but not STS2(STS is now ST and STS2 is now STS) being that it is a 2 seater car...

and I am not sure about the 'great acceleration and torque' hehe

Well, now that I missed the deadline, I'm not so sure.
(You should have stated the 15th if that was the deadline you really meant.
Just like when taxes are due on the 15th, you have until 11:59pm on the 15th, not the 14th which is a day ahead of time. :? )

But, I digress...
$10 aint going to break the bank here, so I'm not worried about that, but I do sincerely hope nobody else got left out due to the 15th vs 16th deadline.
The bigger problem now is we just found out we have visitors showing up this weekend so that really puts a damper on the racing.
