van make/model/year?

Postby kjohnson » Mon Mar 07, 2011 11:55 am

Does anyone know what kind of van we have? I am going to get serious looking for insurance quotes and realized that this is important information for that purpose.

Speaking of the wonder-van............. Joe made arrangements to go up to Helena and drag the thing back and I volunteered to help and we made a day of it today. The van is now at Autoworks and Tim will be looking at it soon so we know if we are looking at a repair or a new vehicle.

The van made the trip down on a dolly behind a rented pickup truck and it all went well with the small exception that one of the side windows must have fell out on the way down. Is there a junkyard around that might have a window?

Thanks Joe for setting it up.

Thanks guys for getting the van. AF&T might have a window. Which one is it?

What is AF&T?

I'm pretty sure the missing window is on the driver's side. There are two windows that pivot on the top and swing out. It looks like these two windows might be the same as each other but I really can't say for sure. I think it's the more rearward of the two. Once we hear from Tim about the engine wee can make a decision as to whether we should find a window.

I thought I'd take a moment to give everyone an update on the van.

Joe and I spent about 3 hours this morning cleaning out the van to get it safe and usable for the season's events. The van had been parked and left for a very long time with a bag of flour (used for marking courses) and it turns out that mice like flour. They eat the flour and then poop a lot. So lots of time with masks and rubber gloves was needed to clean it up. What we ended up doing was removing all the carpet and interior panels and insulation so there is nothing for future mice to nest in. We now have a gutted race van - I think we can run it in E Mod! We ended up filling the dumpster at Autoworks with all the stuff ripped out of the van as well as broken cones and broken folding chairs and just plain old garbage.

So now there is very little in there and it made lots of room to store the stuff we really need.

--------------------------------------------------------

There are a few things we are going to need and I'm hoping that we can get a volunteer to take this on. We will need new fire extinguishers (there were 3 in there, one was broken, one was empty and the last one was good). I don't know how many we are supposed to have but I'm sure it's more than one.

We have one red safety flag. Again - I don't know how many we should have but it's more than we've got.

Lastly - we have two open bags of oil dry stuff. They are each mostly full but there is no way to store them without them spilling everywhere. So we could use one of those big storage tupperware deals from target to keep them in so they don't make a huge mess.

Can anyone take care of these things for the club before next Friday? If you buy them yourself the club will of course cut you a check to reimburse you.

---------------------------------------------------------

Tim has spent no small amount of time and money on our van for us. He has fixed the freeze plug, installed a new radiator, installed a new side window, fixed the engine oil leak, changed the oil, topped up the tranny and diff oil, flushed the brake system out and put in new fluid and gave the engine a tune-up. I just drove it around the parking lot but even that felt much better and it sounds like it's running strong. Tim did not charge the club anything for the time or parts. Nothing. So we owe him a huge debt of gratitude at a minimum. Thank you Tim.

Tim is also allowing us to store the van at his place which will work very well. Autoworks is very close to both Cardinal Distributing and the Commons so it will be easy to stop by and get it and return it there after events. And of course MSU isn't far away either so it will be very convenient for us. Another huge thanks to Tim and Autoworks.

If you can pick up the stuff needed above please speak up so we don't have two folks get the same stuff.

See you soon.

Thanks Tim!

One more thing we could use is a couple of seat covers for the front seats of the van.

As a thank you to Tim, does he have an Autoworks banner?..we could display it at all our events and maybe give a 2minute notice of his sponsorship at each drivers meeting---try generate some business for him...he has gone over and above in a big way, especially with the free parking....or we could put some Autoword ads on the side of the van (unless he might see that venue as negative for the work he wants to highlight--lets face it the van is more of a pigs ear than a silk purse)

I think remembering them when the time comes that you need work is what they are looking for. I think everyone agreed that their name on the van would not be doing them any favors :)

Their name "Autoworks" will also be on the awards glasses so that every time you tip back a glass you will think of them.

With any luck we will see Tim and his boys at some events this season. They have some cool cars - a Sprite and a bright orange 914 that I lust after,
