2011 Helmet rules

Postby DaveMk1 » Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:47 am

With the new season just around the corner I wondered what the acceptable helmet standards were for this coming year. Here is what the 2011 rule book says -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.3 DRIVER’S SAFETY EQUIPMENT 4.3.1 Helmets
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on course:
All helmets meeting the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, SA2000, M2010, M2005, M2000, K2010, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are acceptable.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

So take a look at your current lid to be sure it wasn't made during the Nixon administration and that you will be good to go once the snow is gone.

A friendly reminder from your tech guy.

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html

Summary for those who might not wanna read a very long article: Snell helmets are actually too hard and can actually increase injuries in average crashes. Snell designs for the upper limit fringe cases, ie really high speed really catastrophic crashes. DOT actually protect better on average by not transferring as much of the impact.

Food for thought, I've been a motorcyclist for years and was surprised at the event when I could not wear my DOT helmet. I do realize these are SCCA rules and not like someone here just made them up.

Not sure how this applies to the new 2010 Standard though, and it's about motorcycling not car racing... so there's some additional grains of salt.
