Auto-X locations - we need some more locations!

Postby rkaiser » Wed Aug 27, 2003 8:21 am

We need to get a few more auto-x locations! No reason I should be spending time at home on Sundays during Spring, Summer or Fall :D If any one knows of any good locations please speak up.

Here are a few of my ideas:

Gibson's parking lot
Sacagawia Middle School
MSU parking lots

I know MSU's mantenace peopel are moslty the problem at MSU for some strange reason but my all time fav auto-x was my very first one at the Roskie parking lot. If you have any great contacts or location ideas please speak up!

If you are building a new house soon please get about 5 acres and pave it :D Or if you work at a big store convince the owner to close on Sundays!!

I agree but finding a good open EMPTY parking lot os a Sunday in Bozeman seems tough. Roskie was also one of my all time favorites but not any more then the Ice garden and I also really like the Hospital. The only place that I ran that I don't care for is BSHS. I would still race there because a bad day racing is still better then a good day doing anything else.

I know there has been Corvette autocrosses at the Mall and River Rock. Just wondering why either of those locations wouldn't work.

Where is River Rock? I remember seeing a couple of auto-x's at the Mall before I started to do it.

River Rock is West of Belgrade on Amsterdam road. That big subdivision out there. Not sure why the Corvette guys never invite us for some fun.

The Roskie lot events were my faves too. Especially when the sprinklers went off and sent rivers of water through most of the course. I drove by there just the other day and wondered why were werent running there.

I cant think of any other possible new venues that you guys havent already.

Russ- didnt you mention something about Zoot Ent. earlier this year?

I remember your first AutoX too Russ, the Corrado was a killer machine that day. Everyone commented on how badasz it sounded, mean. I remember the course layout too, very nice course. Has anyone else round here campaigned FOUR cars at our local autox's? Like Russ is about to. I have been in the same blue poohmachine since i started. 8)

If we could import the upper Metra p-lots to Bozeman, i would garauntee we'd all be super happy. Imagine, two lots, each one at least twice as big as the Roskie lot. Maybe when UBerWalmart is done, they'll have a big lot for us. How about the north end of the Target lot? Just a couple that popped in my dome just now.

Problem........ Walmart, Target and other stores with big lots are open 7 days a week. I believe someone in the club has contacted most of them only to be shot down.

MSU is being very difficult for some reason. Like Russ said if anybody knows of a possible in let us know.
I don't like the High School lot either, mostly because it is so exposed to the public. Having people walking down the sidewalk while we are running is not so great.
Has anyone checked out the new BHS lot? Its on 15th down by the baseball fields. It has potential, it looked really good before they put up a bunch of sign posts, but it still may have some potential.
Gibsons might work if we could park at the oil change place. I always forget to include the parking area when I look at a lot. With the recycle bins, that coffee stand, trying to keep 25ft from the building, and pit parking there isn't much room left for a course. :(
Sacagawia has the same pit parking problem.
Basically with the requirement that parking lots in Bozeman have nice landscaping, we are kinda S.O.L. on the big open lot we want. Although I do like the landscaping instead of huge hot expanses of parking lot it sucks for SoloII.
A couple lots I have looked at that I just don't know if they would work or not are the "Life of Montana" lot up on the hill, and the Forest service building off of south 19th.
We probably need to explore the Helena facility for an event or two, keep trying with MSU, and work on doing some Rallycross.

That Riverrock parking lot is big, smooth & there is never anyone in it. Ardi and I have gone over there and messed with our cars during our lunch breaks several times. I just don't know who you would contact to get aproval for the event.

The River Rock location sounds good. Any one got any friends in the Corvette club on who to contact about using this location?

I think one of the Corvette club guys knows the owner. We were supposed to have an event there last summer with the Corvette club, but the owner got worried that there would be too many cars or something.

The new High School parking lot has a lot of promise. Just drove by it today to check it out. No islands but it has a lot of light posts. Hopefully there will be enough room for staging and parking.

Gibsons has that dirt area that could be used for parking that is on the side of the Green House area. Have to take another look at it sometime.

Just thought of another problem. The new high school lot is very close to a residential area. Billings has been going thru some problems with noise issues at some of their events(Skyview is one). I know we get some pretty loud cars even with mufflers. I guess I am just concerned that we would only get one event before not being allowed back because the neighbers thought we are to loud. It would be the same problem at River rock. I would personally try to avoid residential areas if at all possable. I really want to race at Rooskie again

I'd like to race at Roskie again too. MSU also has those two parking lots off of College St which would be awesome!

Driving past the Gibsons lot today, it seems that it might be just to close to alot of 'stuff'. Most notably the park, lots of area to watch over so no dogs, kids or dumb adults would stroll onto the course.

This isnt a close to Bozeman course, but- dont the Vette guys/gals run down at the IMAX place down in W. Jellystone? I remember that lot as being sorta good. MacDonalds right across the street. We could get some folks from Idaho, and Wyoming to play with us too.

Roskie Lot! Yes.

When in thee hiell is Billings MSP gonna get that proposed track going/completed??? I would spend good money to run there 10 times a summer.

It was dark when I drove by tonight but the Ridge looks like it has a very big lot. Probably has a lot of islands also but I couldn't tell. Maybe we just need to convince the Speeedway to pave the infield or parking lot. That wouldn't work either because they have at least one shitty nieghbor.

I thought of the close to houses problem with the new BHS lot too. And there is a church across the street. I think we could get around those things if the lot was worth it.
I have thought about the Ridge lot too. They are open on Sundays, but the north end of the lot is somewhat open and not usually used.
I've been to the IMAX in West Jelly, but I don't remember the lot, I'll have to check it out. There used to be events at the West Jelly airport back in the day, that would be worth checking out again.
Any other ideas? How about we close off the streets downtown and set up a road course

Dosen't a town in Wyoming do that for one of their solo events? Considering how flakey Bozeman is I am amazed that the downtown car show goes over so well. It would be worth a shot.
