Postby WRX-B » Thu Aug 07, 2003 9:40 pm

Hey everybody,

Who's thinking about going to the Skyview event in 'illings Sept 1st?

I havent been to this locale for an event yet, but have heard, i think from some of you, that its a pretty good venue. Who else doesnt want to be finished autoxing after the 17th of this month?

Road trip east! Kill some kones, have some fun, eat some ribs.

Hope we can have a big crew to go out there.

Later,
RickB

WRX for now..........................

I'm planning on going. Time to wear off some off some of that fancy rubber on the STI :D Should be nice and broken-in by then.

Skyview has a nice big, open parking lot if I remember correctly.

I guess its time to run this event past my wife  , see if i can actually go 8) .

Side note: We may have 5 or 6 WRX's at this next event. Is that cool, or what? (everybody say 'WHAT' at the same time, ready.........go!)

Mike - you are going to a REM concert rather than helping us unleash some bozeman whoop a$$ on those poor unsuspecting Billings folk - shame on you :D You know they are just going to do a two hour version of "Loosing my Religion"!

The STI is just about to unleashed! MOTHERS YOU BETTER HIDE YOUR DAUGHTERS! Now, I'll probably suck big time with it :D

I think I am going to go. I will have to leave Philipsburg Sunday night and get up early early Monday so I can get the tires changed. When would we leave in the morning? where do we meet? Of course I still have to run it by the girlfriend but considering I was planning on leaving Monday morning anyway I don't think it will be a problem. Maybe I will just go to P-burg a day earlier to make up for it :D

Ruzz, are we to assume that the STi will be unleashafied at this next event? the 17th? You should well past the 1000 mile mark by then, i would think.

Ray, i would think one would want to leave Bozone at no later than 7am. Get there by 9ish. Unless everyone wants to play CannonBall-Run, and do the trip in 1hour. I dont know where to meet, dont know Billinks too well.

Ruzzel, are you gonna baby that new ride right up to 1000 miles and then let the rev needle go all the way to the right? Or, are you gonna gradually make it up to the rev limit? For some reason, i wanna know.

No new tires go on my car tomorrow.  8)

Isnt everyone purchasing specific tires for each AutoX location we have?

Actually Rik,

I was just wondering where we would meet in Bozo so we could caravan the trip. I would think someplace close to the interstate either east main, 7th ave or 19th ave. It means I will be wakeing the neighbors up at 6 in the morning on labor day with my noisy oilless compressor so I can change tires. Definatly not a NASCRAP pit crew here as it take me 45 minute to change tires, Clean all of my stuff out of the interior and lower my car.

Hey, Anyone watch the NASCRAP race at Watkins Glen? I was pretty happy because I gotta see Jeff Gordon spun out twice. I really don't like that guy.

Nope watched the Cart race at Mid-Ohio

Ridgelys Team lost one car in a crash on the opening laps and the other ran out of fuel at the end of the race . . . . oops. Watching racing is alot more fun when you acualy know someone involved.

Back in the day (before we started having events in Bozeman again) we used to meet at The Store on east main before heading to Billings. Rick is right, definately want to leave by 7:00.

Gotcha Ray, i would say somewheres around the east end of Main street would be good for a spot to meet.

I wish i had seen more of the Naskrappers left AND right turn race, its the only way i can watch them cars run at all. I sorta think its some of the best racing to watch these days. The Rallye of Finland was absolutely awesome. The jumps these cars do scares the shizznit outta me.

If I make it I will be late. I won't be able to leave P-burg till Monday morning early. Hopefully get to Bozo by 8:00. I should be able to get my tires changed withen a half hour. That means I will be hitting Skyveiw around 10:00-10:30 and I will still have to lower my car and remove everything from the interior. Thats the plan for me right now.

I have to say that you were ripping at this last event, really putting the car on edge. My friend from Miles City saw your car running and said that 'whoever is in there is going for it'.

I think the Twin Turbos should lead the way out to Billings and scare all the troopers. :P

Russ,
You old man. I just turned 37 last Thursday. :D

Crystal, I will be honest, My car makes me fast because my driving is horrible. Most of the time I feel like I am only getting 90% out of the car. Your driving has been getting better at every event so you can beat me. The only difference between ours cars other then horsepower(that I really can't use) is just a little suspension work that could be done for under $1000. A Ground Control Coilover kit is $400 and can be used with your stock Shocks/struts and a rear strut bar is $130. I went with a good set of adjustable shocks/struts but don't feel it improved my times. I recomend the Ground Control setup over just useing lowering springs. The suspension was the one thing that took my car from a midpack runner to a car capable of running in the top 5. Sticky tires also helped a lot. They say autocross is 90% driver, 5% car and 5% crazy Mojo. I am not a driver and I lost my Mojo a long time ago so you allready have an advantage on me :P

Rick, I think a blue WRX should lead the way

Come on now Ray, you can drive real good. Way too much Hp though, i would suggest you shut down your whole left side of your motor, the whole bank of cylinders. Take the plugs out or something, yeah, thats the ticket. I am gonna be 35 in february, i can feel my mojo slipping. And Ray, if this Skyview event is even a little bit more open than the ultra tight Bozeman courses we run, you are gonna be really hard to beat. Now we got Kaiser in a proper tarmac eating machine, i am gonna be sucking exhaust from him too. I have a feeling he is gonna do some scary dance when he goes quicker than me next Monday. Be prepared everyone.

(Crystal- here's my tip on beating Ray, snag a set of really sticky tires for your front wheels only, seriously, thats where your car needs the stick, my 2cents)(or- just throw him a wink or two before his runs, its been working for me, hmmn-might not work with you-if it works for me)

Well - happy belated b-day Ray! Say that kinds rhymes :D

Better watch out Crystal - you will get many different opinions on how to make your car faster - even if you don't ask for them!

For suspension I recommend a matched set of springs and shocks that are valved correctly for the springs. For the ultimate handeling, nothing beats a set of coilovers that are made for you car. All depends on what you want to spend. Sway bars are a nice addition to flatten out the cornering and remove some of the understeer of 4wd's.

I'm still not quite sold on the super sticky tires - been getting good times with my 2 year old Bridgestone S-03 street tires (thats is when those bloody cones don't cause me problems!) :D Probably coud go a bit faster with stickies but I'm too lazy to keep changing wheels!

The best thing that has helped me is just driving the darn car. The best modi is to tighten the nut behind the steering wheel :D Looks like you are getting ahold of that twin turbo beast!

Speaking of....Ruzzl, can you adjust your coilies on the Cosstronic? If you can, you need to soften the hell out of the fronts.

Anyone know where Skyview HS is anyway? We dont need Rick leading the way, i dont know 'illings too well.

Curious - why do you think the front's need to be softer? I happen to think it's about right - handles very well and isn't too rough considering. Drives a lot better than the old Corrado with upgraded shocks and springs. They don't have any adjustements aside from height.

To get to Skyview take Main Steet through the Heights and go all the way up Wicks Lane - it's quite a ways out there so be patient. Take a left on Wicks Lane and head East until you see the High School on your felft side - it's a little ways out there. Used to play soccer there in my youth.

Rick, I feel the horsepower has been hurting me. Thoses cones have a tendency to come up mighty fast and stop winking at me because it really grosses me out.

Russ, I still think your Cosworth would be nearly unbeatable with stickier tires but those Potenzas are pretty good so maybe not.

Crystal, As far as suspension goes I feel I have my car hooked up pretty good. The only thing that is still causeing problems is the slight push I can't get rid of. I might spend some time this week trimming the bump stops a bit more so I actually have a suspension in the front when I lower the car for autocross. It should help with my push problem.

Ruskel, i be theorizing that you may delete some understeer by softening the front. And, i was just throwing out some unsolicited advice. Do you have a big ole sway bar up front?

I really think you should have both of your black sleds out in Billings, i wouldnt mind setting a land speed record in the Escort on the way east. Then, i could drive your STi for ya on the cone course.

Ray- more neggy camber! NOT to FIFTY!!! Or, how about a good amount of toe out (for a short time span) on the rear wheelies. You'll rotate like the wind, i think.

Not much I can do abut the low speed understeer except get a smaller turbo or find a way to get more low end power. Since 2/3's of the power is going to the rear wheels, just need to get the power there to force it to oversteer. It's more of a power issue than a handling issue. When the car is in the power zone (3500 rpms +) it oversteers plenty! I'm currently in discussions with my Autronic dealer about adjusting the ignition timing a bit to help with low end power. The car has a 28 mm front sway bar and a 22 mm rear stock also has big front and rear strut tower braces.
