What tires for autocross will you buy and why?

Postby RayAR » Wed Jul 30, 2003 12:29 pm

Just wondering because locally Street tires seem to be running best. I have been a big believer in DOT R's but after running Falkens this last weekend and BFG KDWS's at the race before I am pretty convinced that DOT R's do not hold an advantage on our local courses. The car was the most predictable it has ever been on the Falkens and actually went where I pointed it.

I have just heard a tip that Sears Roadmasters are the new hot tire for autocross........ If only they made those in my size. Really........ I heard it from a very reliable source. :D

Well I was planning to get R-compounds, but with the times yous guys have been getting on HP street tires I might reconsider.
I was thinking Kumho Victoracers or V700s though for the 911 if it ever is in one piece again. :)

If I won the lottery though I'd want Pilot Sports:

Russ, I think you should get these for your new Subie ;)

I almost ordered the Sears Roamasters on Ray's tip, but then, whoah, when i saw that pic of the Generals- i almost had a Maalox moment. I am definately gettin the Generals.

But seriously, those Michelins that Joe wants are sposed to be the killgizzy. Real sticky and can last a good long time with proper treatment. And Joe wants em cuz they were built for Porsches!!! Their only ~200 bux a pop, what are you waiting for Joe? (you are waiting, like the rest of us, to be adopted by Kaiser)

Hey Ricky, I am gunning for you and Nick's Neon. I have one last chance to set fast time of the day at an event this year. You can bet that I will have a good amount of camber at the next event and probably play with the shocks. Just adding some camber and Getting it off of the bumpstops should get rid of the push. I hope shock adjustments will get it a little loose.

How's it going to feel when you get beat by a 3800lb whale of a car? Probably by the next race I will be driveing like shit and I will have to eat my words.

Ray- I would love for you to beat my time, Russ too for that matter, then i will start driving with both eyes open and my e-brake in the off position.

3800lbs, thats good, more downward pressure on the tires! My car aint so light weight either, probably 3300+ pounds with my skinny extremities, yet full gut region in it. I am a wee bit down on power to you. Its Russ that is sitting pretty(in the Kozzwerth), sub 3000lbs, lots of grip, big ponies, AWD, etc. Its gonna be hard to beat his times, oh.......wait, oh yeah. :P :o (couldnt resist)

BAD NEON! GO AWAY! :!:  :x  Its time for me to focus.

I think anyone with awd should have to run on tires with maximum tread width of 155. How's that sound to you guys.

I think all Blue WRX's, White Dodge Stealths and Green Neons should be forced to run a 20 mm intake restrictor. Maybe cars should be run with the stock tires!

ts Russ that is sitting pretty(in the Kozzwerth), sub 3000lbs, lots of grip, big ponies, AWD, etc

Ric, you forgot to mention my big turbo lag too :D I'm not running some little girly turbo :P

2 very tiny turbos that I have a feeling would have a hard time blow drying my hair. They are just girly turbos. BTW mine is only a 3 liter engine so I only have 1 liter over Your 2.0 Cosworth. Cosworth or Mitsubishi, which one do you think causes other drivers hearts to skip a beat or 2? If Type R stickers are worth 15 horsepower on your typical Honda then the name Cosworth has to be worth at least 150 horspower :)

The weight of my car is a disadvantage but I have got it set up pretty good now.

The Cosworth badge doesan't add any power if it came on the car. It only adds power if it's placed on a non-cosworth powered car. Do you want be to get you one for the Stealth :D

I saw Ruzzel in his new ride. Looked mean  .

I hope we can see that machine dance with the cones this month.

Its got one nicely sized turbo and mass quantities of tractable torque and horsepower. No whining on the turbo lag front then Russ. 8) Right? :P

(not to mention the killer/trick differential setup that does wonders to banish understeer) (and awesome tires) (and bombproof tranny w/ a second gear made for the Garden course, prolly) (the list goes on...)

I will help you bring both cars out the the I'Garden on the 17th. You can pick which car i can drive, i wouldnt mind either.

Please Russ, Let the STi come out and play on Aug 17. I also want to see it in action. I always heard you are supposed to break a car in the same way you plan to drive it :D

Nope the STI cant come out and play yet - needs a few more miles on it before it starts dishing out the beatings :D Hoping to make it to the Sept 1 Auto-X in Billings with it though. Got a couple new toys going on the Cossie - not upping power just letting it breath more!
