Re: Car Improvement Season 2015.

Kent, my experience with the lightweight flywheel in my MR2 was that, as long as you are shifting quickly, the quicker RPM drop is actually beneficial. Starting from a stop takes a bit of getting used to, but it doesn't make the car particularly hard to drive, just different. One other thing I notic...

Re: MY DIY Shock Dyno

Spring rate, motion ratio, and sprung mass per corner is pretty much it. The spreadsheet that generates the pretty graphs handles all the other math. Do you happen to have the specs (overall length, stroke, etc) on your shocks handy? That will be helpful in figuring out what will be needed to actual...

Re: MY DIY Shock Dyno

Very cool stuff. I love this. Your post leads me to believe that for every spring rate and car mass that there is an optimal damping rate. Do I have this right? dave That's the theory. Now, there is certainly more than one theory about what that optimal actually IS. The 65% critical theory is basic...

MY DIY Shock Dyno

For a while now I have been working on building my own shock dyno so that I can take a more technical approach to the adjuster knob(s) on my shocks, rather than just guessing:). I finally finished it a few days ago and have been playing with one of the Koni 8611's double adjustables that will (event...

Season Points Musings

While compiling season points for the party on Friday I realized that there are a lot of different ways to assign points, and that it might be worth having a club discussion on how we want to do it. For the past few years at least we have done 1st=10, 2nd=9, 3rd=8, etc, down to 10th and below all ge...

Re: Food for Thought: The Math Behind Light Weight Wheels

Surely lowering by reducing the tire diameter couldn't raise the roll centers, could it? But it should lower the roll center by the same amount as it lowers the CG (which is good), whereas lowering the car with shorter springs (or a lower perch) lowers the roll center more than it lowers the CG (wh...

Re: Food for Thought: The Math Behind Light Weight Wheels

Smaller diameter even with the same weight will definitely reduce rotational inertia. By quite a lot actually, as the radius term is squared in the inertia formula, but the mass term is not. However it of course won't have any effect on unsprung weight, which is the other thing that wheel weight fee...

Yeah... I can't argue with that.

I just finished building my own shock dyno so I can figure out what that adjuster knob actually DOES, and then hopefully set it correctly and not worry about it any more. Will post more about that soon.

Food for Thought: The Math Behind Light Weight Wheels

I like lightweight wheels as much as the next car guy, but lets keep things in perspective... A quick survey on tire rack shows that 24lb is a fairly good average weight for a 235/40-17 tire. And due to it's mass being further from the center than the wheel, the tire has a much bigger effect on mome...

I know I've turned a car or truck away, but I don't remember what it was now. With the Fiesta and 500 that are now banned, I wouldn't allow one to run simply for the reason they are specifically denied. My reason is insurance, if something happens with one how do you explain to SCCA headquarters yo...

Green "looks" like it should be shorter, if nothing else. And the curves look larger radius, which should be faster. Red is the line they teach in EVO school. Turn early, get on the "back side" of each cone, and get yourself setup earlier for the next one. In my experience, if I ...
